If you have room, try using pandanus and yuccas in your Gold Coast garden, as they provide textural accent and are very hardy plant species.The ubiquitous pandanus is used extensively in coastal park areas, as it withstands drought, wind and

salt laden air. It has immense health, economic and cultural importance in the Pacific, second only to the Coconut.

We recently worked in a garden with two large pandanus specimens (see below) and with judicious use of a handsaw we exposed the beautiful linear bark and created a focal point in the garden.

Yuccas can be used in a similar way in the garden, but because of their slightly smaller form, make a great border, on a fence line. Underplanting with succulents, creates a low maintenance garden, with stunning visual effect, as pictured below. Remember that a dark painted fence adds additional drama and provides a neutral foil, to accent the plants.
